Opened in 1993 the terminal serves long haul scheduled flights and a number of charter airlines. Check-in is on the upper level and has space to spare. Manchester currently handles around 14 million passengers each year but the expected increase in traffic should cause no problems in this impressive building which has plenty of space and comfort.

Both check-in and Arrivals, on the lower level, have direct links to the short term car park. Catering and shopping in the departure lounge before passport control offer a varied choice including a restaurant with full table service. Even at busy times there is a relaxed atmosphere, helped by generous daylight and strategically placed shrubs and trees. Those just wanting to relax quietly can find peace and comfortable seating on the mezzanine floor.
The food and drink outlets are comfortable too although the bar can get noisy.
The Airside lounge is impressive, well appointed and relaxed without attempting to be a major shopping mall. For those that find that irksome Manchester is stepping up its retail interests but let's hope that they do not go over the top despite the money-spinning potential. The lounge is family friendly with a children's play area and a selection of games machines.
Access to rail and bus stations and Terminal 1 is from the Arrivals area via the Skylink covered bridge which has moving walkways.
