A building which places art before advertising has something going for it and Atlanta is justifiably proud of its multi-million dollar international flight concourse. Instead of commercial come-ons display panels feature works by American artists and the management's ambition is to have a different exhibitor at every departure gate. There's an interesting little mixture of art and aviation at Gate E16 which, in time honored style, has caused a ripple of controversy. Reactions vary from amazed to amused depending on how your mind works. Let us say the matrons of Atlanta had their doubts about it. No building, however high-tech, is perfect. Concourse E, is a long way from the main terminals at the end of the subway rail system. Arriving passengers often find it baffling to give up their bags again just after picking them up from the baggage carousel. Federal security regulations and shortage of space on the rail transit system are to blame. It is an on-going source of complaint particularly as passengers can sometimes wait up to 30 minutes in the main terminal before they are re-united with their tooth brush and clean underwear. |
